Try A Staycation

Sometimes, we need a break. We need to get away. We need to experience things in a different setting. That much needed break helps us put our mind at ease. We need the escape so we can find ourselves. So we can solve problems. So we can truly enjoy life. But what happens when we can't afford to travel very far? Or our schedule simply does not allow it? A staycation is always a good idea.

My most recent trip to New York City felt like a staycation. And I feel like it did mostly because I lived there for years, and never truly experienced many parts like I really ought to. We get caught up with life. We wake up to chase things, and we forget to notice all of the wonderful things that already surround us. So, instead of looking for an airbnb near my office in Harlem, I opted for a cute boutique hotel in Soho. That way, I can walk around the neighborhood and get to know it in a different way. With new eyes. With a visitor's point of view.

The first night, I walked alone through all the little streets, almost chasing the sun disappearing behind the the tall buildings. New York City is magical that way. It makes you forget about the dirty streets and overcrowded spaces. And you find yourself admiring all of the little quirky details.

If you've never done a staycation before, here are some things to consider:

  • A good staycation doesn't have to cost you much. Finding a nice little hotel or bed and breakfast in your town or nearby city can be the way to go.
  • If you can't afford to eat out, you can bring all your favorite snacks and fruits and wine and you indulge that way.
  • Bring your favorite magazines or some books to catch up on reading.
  • Explore the streets. Go for long walks alone or with a loved one. You never know what you might discover!
  • Just be present while you've taken the much needed break. Get off social media, and treat yourself. Oh, make sure to buy fresh flowers because they always make things better.
